The other reviewers have referred to the wonderful singing cast of this recording, as well as the great occasion of the 200 anniversary of the birth of W A. Mozart. This recording was made on 27 January 1956, Herr Mozart's 200th birthday. What makes this recording so special, apart from the dreamt vocal cast, is the conductor Guido Cantelli.Cantelli was the protege of the great Arturo Toscanini. He was at that time newly promoted to be the artistic director of La Scala, and this 'birthday' performance really marked a landmark for that illustrious opera house. Most unfortunately, Cantelli did not leave many operatic recordings. This one is perhaps the ONLY one that I know of on CD. Later that very year, in November 1956, this highly talented conductor died in a plane crash at southern France, robbing the musical world of a giant musician and artist. It was said of Cantelli that his death changed the entire landscape of the classical musical world: the subsequent rise of Karajan, and of course, directly, the rise of Bernstein, who virtually stepped into Cantelli's shoes in several important conducting and direction appointments.I don't suppose any serious opera or classical music fan could 'survive' by missing out this ultra important recording.Yes - the singing cast is exceptional. I fully agree with the other reviewers on this aspect of the recording.
